A Dacor Burner Keeps Clicking: Know the Difference Between Wet Ignition and a Gas Safety Problem

Continuous clicking after cleaning can come from moisture or a switch/ignition issue, but any ignition complaint deserves a clear gas-safety boundary. The clicking sound itself is not the only thing to evaluate.

Burner keeps clicking in a premium kitchen

A gas burner that keeps clicking can be reacting to moisture on the igniter, a draft, or a knob left in the Lite position. If it clicks while a flame is already burning, turn the knob to the setting you want; if the clicking continues or you smell gas, turn the burner off and stop.

Continuous clicking after cleaning can come from moisture or a switch/ignition issue, but any ignition complaint deserves a clear gas-safety boundary. The clicking sound itself is not the only thing to evaluate.

Safety symptoms outrank convenience. If there is persistent gas odor, smoke, sparking, a burning electrical smell, repeated breaker trips or water contacting electrical connections, stop using the appliance as appropriate and follow the relevant emergency/safety guidance.

Safe checks that do not require opening the appliance

  • Turn the affected burner off and let removable parts cool.
  • If the issue followed cleaning, make sure accessible burner components are correctly seated and fully dry.
  • Ventilate the area and follow appropriate emergency guidance if you smell persistent gas.

Two kinds of clicking

Clicking before the burner lights is normal. The use-and-care manual for one Dacor Modernist gas cooktop says the click-click-click sound when you push in and turn the knob to Lite shows the ignition system is working. The manual for a Pro dual-fuel range says the igniter sparks until the burner lights and stops once it ignites.

Clicking after the flame is established is different. That manual lists a knob left in the Lite position as the cause of a burner that clicks during operation, with the fix being to turn the knob to the desired setting. If it still clicks, it says to contact a technician.

Symptom What it can point to What you can safely check
Clicks, then lights and stops Normal ignition Nothing to fix
Keeps clicking while the flame burns Knob still in Lite Turn the knob to the cooking setting
Clicks continuously, no flame, after cleaning Wet electrode or misaligned burner parts Turn off, let parts dry, check cap and base are seated
Sparks repeatedly near a vent or open window Draft disturbing the flame Reduce drafts and lower hood speed as the manual suggests
Gas odor with any of the above Gas safety condition Turn the knob off, ventilate and follow gas-leak guidance

Keep the checks external and manual-approved. Do not remove electrical panels, defeat door switches, bypass safety devices, work on gas valves or lines, open a microwave cabinet, or perform sealed-refrigeration work.

The point where troubleshooting should stop

Do not continue ignition testing when gas odor persists. Internal switches, ignition wiring, valves and pressure checks are technician work.

A symptom can look minor while the next diagnostic step is not. Premium built-in products may place electrical, water and gas connections behind panels or cabinetry; moving the appliance without a plan can create a second problem.

Moisture, electrodes and what not to spray

The Modernist cooktop manual says the white ceramic electrodes must be clean and dry. It says not to clean igniters with water or spray cleaner into the manifold holes, and to wash burner caps and heads and dry them completely. Parts that are installed wrong can give poor ignition or uneven flames, so a burner that misbehaves right after cleaning is worth rechecking for seating.

The Pro range manual adds that the igniter can also spark when a draft or home ventilation affects the flame, and suggests eliminating drafts and lowering the blower speed. That is a quick observation to make before assuming an electrical fault.

Protect the home around the appliance

If water is present, limit spread into cabinetry and flooring without reaching into electrical compartments. If the appliance is hot, allow safe cooling rather than forcing a latch or panel. If a gas appliance will not ignite normally, do not keep cycling it when gas odor is present.

What to document for the technician

  • exact model number;
  • exact warning sign;
  • whether the appliance was running when it appeared;
  • any code;
  • whether power, water or gas was shut off;
  • what safe external check was performed.

Cooking-appliance context

For a range, wall oven, cooktop or rangetop, identify the exact zone, cavity and mode. A problem limited to one burner or one oven cavity is a different diagnostic pattern from a failure affecting every heating function.

Gas and line-voltage cooking appliances also have a clear DIY limit. User-accessible cleaning, cap seating, settings and observation are appropriate; internal ignition, valve, wiring, control and power testing belongs to qualified service.

What a steady flame tells you

The Pro range manual describes a normal flame as steady and blue, notes that an orange tint from foreign matter in new gas lines may fade with use, and says yellow tips are normal on LP gas. Large or yellow flames elsewhere can indicate the wrong burner orifice for LP or natural gas, which is a service matter. If a burner clicks and also burns oddly, describe both.

If ignition fails, the Modernist manual says to turn the burner off and wait a few minutes for gas to dissipate before retrying. It also says to rely on actual flame rather than the knob LED, since the LED only shows the knob is on.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to keep using the appliance if it works intermittently?

Not when the intermittent symptom involves gas, smoke, sparking, burning odor, overheating, water near electricity or repeated breaker trips.

Can I remove a panel to see whether a wire is loose?

No. Internal electrical testing is not a homeowner check.

What if the problem disappeared after a reset?

Record what happened. If a safety-related symptom returns, do not rely on repeated resets.

Is it normal for a burner to click after it lights?

No. The Modernist cooktop manual lists clicking during operation as a knob left in the Lite position. Turn the knob to the setting you want after ignition and call a technician if it persists.

Can a draft make the igniter keep sparking?

On the Pro range manual we reviewed, yes. A draft or home ventilation can disturb the flame, and the manual suggests eliminating drafts and lowering the blower speed.

Can I spray cleaner at the igniter to stop the clicking?

No. The manual says not to clean igniters with water or spray cleaner into the manifold holes. Dry the cap and head instead and check they sit correctly.
